What Is Staking?

A clear, beginner-friendly explanation of staking — what it is, how it works, and why people use it.

What Is Staking?

Staking is the process of locking up your cryptocurrency for a set period in exchange for earning rewards. On XamanProtocol, you deposit XRP or XLM and choose a staking pool. In return, your balance earns an Annual Percentage Yield (APY) — a reward rate expressed as a yearly percentage.

How Staking Works on XamanProtocol

XamanProtocol operates as a custodial staking platform. This means:

  1. You deposit funds into your XamanProtocol account.
  2. You select a staking pool and commit an amount.
  3. XamanProtocol manages the underlying staking mechanics on your behalf.
  4. You earn rewards according to the pool's APY.
  5. At the end of the lock period (or at any time for flexible pools), you can withdraw your principal plus earned rewards.

Why People Stake

Staking lets your crypto work for you instead of sitting idle. Rather than simply holding XRP or XLM in a wallet, you earn additional tokens over time. Key benefits:

  • Passive income — Earn rewards without active trading
  • Compounding potential — Reinvest rewards to increase future earnings
  • Predictable returns — Fixed pools offer guaranteed APY for the lock period

Risks of Staking

Staking is not risk-free. Important considerations:

  • Market risk — Your assets may decrease in USD value even while earning APY rewards in the same asset.
  • Lock risk — Locked pools prevent access to your funds for the lock duration. If prices drop significantly, you cannot sell until the lock expires.
  • Platform risk — As a custodial service, XamanProtocol holds your funds. While we maintain strong security practices, custodial platforms carry inherent counterparty risk.
  • APY variability — Flexible pool rates can change. Only fixed/locked pools guarantee their APY.

Staking vs Trading

Staking is a long-term, low-effort strategy compared to trading. Traders actively buy and sell to profit from price movements. Stakers hold their position and earn rewards regardless of short-term price changes. For most long-term crypto holders, staking is a way to maximize their holdings without the stress and time commitment of active trading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I lose money staking?+
Your staked token balance will not decrease — you earn rewards on top of your principal. However, if the USD price of XRP or XLM falls during your staking period, the USD value of your holdings will decrease even as your token count grows.
What is APY?+
APY stands for Annual Percentage Yield. It represents the annualized rate of return on your staked amount, including the effect of compounding. A 10% APY on 100 XRP means you would earn approximately 10 XRP over one year.
Is staking the same as lending?+
No. Staking on XamanProtocol means committing your assets to a pool managed by the platform. You are not directly lending to another party.
How often are staking rewards calculated?+
Rewards are calculated daily and accrue to your staking position. They are added to your balance upon unstaking or at the end of the lock period.
What is the minimum amount I can stake?+
Minimum stake amounts vary by pool. Flexible pools typically have a lower minimum than locked pools. Check each pool's details on the Staking page.
