What Is the Stellar Network?

An introduction to Stellar — the blockchain network behind XLM and XamanProtocol's airdrop system.

What Is Stellar?

Stellar is an open-source blockchain network designed for fast, low-cost payments and asset transfers. Founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb (co-founder of XRP), Stellar focuses on financial access — connecting banks, payment systems, and individuals around the world.

How Stellar Differs from XRPL

Stellar and XRPL are similar in many ways (fast, cheap, no PoW mining) but have different focuses:

  • XRPL focuses on XRP as a bridge asset for institutional payments
  • Stellar focuses on asset issuance and cross-border remittances for individuals
  • Stellar's Claimable Balances feature allows on-chain, non-custodial token distributions (used for XamanProtocol airdrops)

Stellar Claimable Balances

A Stellar Claimable Balance is an on-chain mechanism for distributing tokens to specific addresses. The platform creates the balance on-chain, and the recipient must submit a claim transaction to receive it. This is non-custodial — once created on-chain, the platform cannot take the balance back (subject to any defined claim conditions).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does XamanProtocol use Stellar for airdrops?+
Stellar's Claimable Balance mechanism provides an elegant, on-chain way to distribute tokens to many users at once. It is more transparent and verifiable than off-chain distribution methods.
